Club costs include gym rental, tournament entry fees, and coaches’ compensation. Travel expense and uniform fees are not included.
Melissa Haines begins her second season as the Director of the Delaware region. Last year she coached the 17/18’s team. Melissa also coached club for 8 years prior to coming to DVA for 15’s, 16’and 17’s age groups. Highlights from her DVA career includes multiple silver finishes and a gold medal in a national qualifying tournament. All of her senior players have gone on to play NCAA collegiate volleyball. Melissa also ran a handful of DVA Summer Camp Programs.
Melissa is from Brookhaven, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Sun Valley High School in 2006 where she won back-to-back Del Val championships and was captain of her team. She then went on to play at Neumann University as the libero of her team. During this time the team won back-to-back championships in their division and made two NCAA tournament appearances. She made first team all-conference and voted for most valuable defensive player. Melissa was inducted into the Neumann University Hall of Fame in 2014. She was the Neumann University assistant coach for five years before taking on the head coaching position at Sun Valley High School.
Since co-founding DVA with Rich Comly, Frank Garrett has been very involved in the club as Vice President, Assistant Director of the Aston Division, and Coach. This year, he will serve as Recruiting Coordinator. Frank has extensive coaching experience at the 14-18s age groups as well as college. His DVA teams have won numerous medals, including a regional championship qualifier for the national championship. He has run camps and clinics at every age level, including camps at Neumann University and with DVA as well as clinics at the MAPL college showcase. Frank has coached at Liberty Belles and worked with Synergy before starting up DVA.
Frank was head coach at Garnet Valley High School and also coached at Cardinal O’Hara. Both teams were highly successful, with Garnet Valley going to the 3 round in the States. In addition, Frank coached at Neumann University, rebuilding the program with an overall record of 118/16. Neumann won the conference championship twice, going undefeated for two seasons and 2 years with only two losses. Frank was inducted into the hall of fame for DVA and inducted in the hall of fame in the Aston and Delco regions.
Ashley Merton begins her third season with DVA after two successful years with the 16s, 17s, and 18’s age groups. Highlights of her previous two seasons include gold and silver finishes at national qualifying tournaments, and a gold finish which included a bid to Nationals in the 2016 season with her 18s group. In addition to coaching, Ashley has been involved with DVA Summer Camps since 2010.
Ashley is from Media, PA but just recently moved to Ridley Park, PA. She graduated from Penncrest High School in 2010 where she played volleyball on varsity for four years, winning the Central League Championships her Junior and Senior years. She then went on to play for Shippensburg University as a defensive specialist. She graduated from Shippensburg in 2014. Ashley continues to play in adult co-ed volleyball leagues in Delaware County and Chester County when she is not coaching or working.
Nicole Merton begins her sixth season with DVA after five successful years in the 12’s, 13’s, and 14’s ages groups. Highlights of her previous five seasons include numerous gold medals at both CHRVA and KRVA tournaments, multiple gold and silver finishes at national qualifying tournaments, and won a bid to Nationals in the 2016 season. In addition to team coaching, Nicole organized and facilitated DVA’s Summer Programs/Camps in 2011, and also was the coordinator of DVA’s College Showcase in 2012 and 2013.
Nicole is from Media, PA where she still resides. She graduated from Cardinal O’Hara High School in 2008 where she played volleyball and won four Catholic League Championships. She then went on to play at Widener University where she was Captain of her team, First Team All-Conference in 2010/2011 and voted Most Valuable Player of her team in 2011. She still plays occasionally in leagues and pickup games when she finds time outside of work and coaching.
Halee will be returning for her second year of coaching, previously coaching the Delaware 13’s team and beach volleyball for DVA. This will be Halee’s tenth year as a player, and last year Halee was the PSUAC All-Conference Newcomer of the Year, leading Penn State Brandywine to the PSUAC championship. Halee is from Aston, PA and is currently attending Penn State Brandywine as a forensics psychology major.
This is Heather’s second year coaching volleyball at DVA. Last year she coached ages 10-13’s and really enjoyed her first year with the DVA family! Heather has been an avid volleyball player for over 15 years in Aston, PA where she currently lives. She played at Sun Valley High School and Neumann University where she graduated in 2009 as a Registered Nurse. Heather continues to compete in many indoor and outdoor volleyball tournaments throughout the year. She is very dedicated and passionate about volleyball and looks forward to a new season!
Kelsey Craig, now 26 years old, has played volleyball since she was 12 years old. After high school, she continued her volleyball career by playing in college at Gwynedd-Mercy. She continues to play in volleyball leagues today.
Kelsey began her DVA coaching career 7 years ago, when she was a freshman in college. She has been both a head coach and an assistant coach. She has coached 14-18 year olds since then. Kelsey is currently the JV Coach at St. Elizabeth’s High School in Wilmington, DE, where she has coached for the past 3 years. The previous 2 years she was the high school freshman coach.
Rachel is originally from the Chester County area and currently lives in West Chester. This season she will be entering her 5th year with DVA and has coached age groups that range from 13’s through 16’s. The teams she has been a part of have brought home numerous medals, and most notably, won the bid to Disney.
For three years, Rachel was the JV Coach at West Chester East High School. She has been playing volleyball since 9th grade – playing all years of high school, three years of club, and three years of college. She currently plays in a few A-level leagues in her area when she has time. Rachel is majoring in accounting at Delco.
Jess will be starting her 3rd year coaching with DVA and, to her amazement, her 10th year coaching! She has coached 5th-12th graders and 12s, 13s, 14s for club. In previous years, she has participated in DVA Academy Night at Ursuline Academy and the DVA Beach Program. She has also coached at St. Bernadette CYO, St. Mary Magdalen CYO, Villa Maria Academy, and Valley Forge Juniors Volleyball Club.
Jess is originally from Drexel Hill, PA, and now lives in Wilmington, DE. She graduated with a Master of Science (Specialization: Health Care Administration) from St. Joseph’s University and a Bachelor of Science and Business Administration from Kutztown University. Jess started playing volleyball in the 6th grade and ended her volleyball playing career after her Senior year of high school when she was part of a state championship winning team. (She played Lacrosse in college).
